Halloween 2015

So I like to keep my Halloween costumes under wraps as much as possible usually. I LOVE the surprise on peoples face when I do a costume well and they see it for the first time. I've wanted to do a Poison Ivy for a long time and I got it all together this year.

I like how it turned out but there's a few changes I wish I had made.
I had originally wanted to do something more along the animated series Poison;

But I didn't have the time to make my own top, especially since my sewing machine was fighting me every time I turned around. I did look online to see if I could find one, it's essentially a play boy bunny teddy just in green and with the ragged edges at the bottom, so I thought maybe I could dye a white one and make slight alterations. Do you know how hard it is to find a white teddy like that? I gave up and started thinking outside the box.
I came across the corset I ended up using and liked it because the color was about right and the lace had a leafy look to it rather than a floral one. So I thought, "OK, I'll dress her up a bit. Poison dressed for a fancy night out." The tutu was a given, one because I love the fluffy of them and two, because I'm not that comfortable with showing off my butt. I thought the shoes worked well towards her general attitude and knew that I could wind faux ivy through them easily. I did manage to find some tights in the correct color, but I failed to check they were advertised correctly and discovered too late that they were not sheer to waist as I had thought. My own idiocy there. I created the armband with some ivy leaves I pulled off the spare end of what's wound through my laces, wire and some acrylic paint. Easy enough and I think it turned out really well.
Before the paint:
It caught my hair several times through the night and drove me a little nuts sliding down my arm. Should have used something to help it stay put, but I wasn't sure what.
At any rate, I was happy with the over all costume.

Things I learned:
  • I have a short torso and that corset required a longer one.
  • Fake eyelashes are annoying and difficult to mess with, hence why I'm not wearing them. I had intended to. Couldn't get them right and got mad.
  • Always do a test run while you still have plenty of time to order something new if it doesn't work or look right.
  • I need to get better with makeup in general.
  • Start actively planning a costume earlier if it has the potential to get complicated!
So now I'm plotting for next year!
